The architect Hubertus Eilers was between 1986 and 1993 employed at the Behnisch & Partners office and then a project partner of Günter Behnisch. Since 1995 Eilers’ architect’s office has been based in Gröben near Potsdam. At Behnisch & Partners Hubertus Eilers was involved in numerous projects, for example between 1986 and 1988 in the new office and production buildings of Leybold AG in Alzenau / Lower Franconia or as project architect for the chamber area in the new building of the German Bundestag in Bonn (1988 to 1992).
Hubertus Eilers sees himself as a product designer and works on developing attractive form. Form is thus closely connected to the function and structure of products. This type of forming/shaping disassociates itself from design with marked determination of fashion and time.
The step from architect to designer of furniture had already been made with the new Leybold AG building by Behnisch & Partners. For this project Günther Behnisch and Hubertus Eilers designed a writing desk with a characteristic freeform top which was awarded a prize at the Orgatec trade fair in Cologne in 1988. In conjunction with VS, this item of furniture was expanded into a comprehensive table range which Hubert Eilers has continued to develop into today’s Series 901 office-furniture system.
The system offers office furniture of diverse uses which fits elegantly into the most varied room situations and office environments. The fact that highly important buildings have also been furnished proves that Series 901 furniture combines very well with the respective architecture and suitably communicates the culture of a company to the outside world.
Hubertus Eilers also designs the Series 700 carcass-furniture system and the Series 2000 free-standing, thin-profile screen system, which serves up every possibility of intelligent room partitioning: discretion screens quickly and easily create partitioned work areas while functional screens serve to set up flexible room partitioning. Castors turn the light screen elements into a flexible screen. Thanks to its ease and unobtrusiveness of design, the system can be used in any environment.
His latest product for VS is the “Lounge Series”, a range of simple and comfortable upholstered furniture for use in the communication areas of offices and for waiting areas in schools.
In addition to his work in product design (participating in further product developments [e.g. Series 700 carcass-furniture system]), Hubertus Eilers has since 1996 also designed numerous exhibition stands, exhibitions and branch offices for VS, such as for example education trade fairs and the Orgatec office-furniture trade fair, which is held every two years in Cologne.
