One system for all workstations

Series 901. Design: Günter Behnisch, Hubertus Eilers

The Series 901 provides effective office furniture which is quick and simple to set up, highly diverse in its functional range and can be easily slotted into the most varied room situations and office environments. The system’s spectrum of use is suitably broad, ranging from office applications, ergonomic sitting/standing workstations, tables for customer consultation or project teams through to prestigious management workstations.

The fact that highly important buildings have also been furnished with this furniture proves that Series 901 furniture in its classically clear and intelligible form can combine very well and elegantly with the respective architecture and suitably communicate the culture of a company to the outside world.

A system with a history

In 1986 the architects Günter Behnisch and Hubert Eilers designed an individual desk with welded all-round frame to furnish the company Leybold AG in Alzenau and developed this desk jointly with VS. This B&P table (awarded a prize at the Orgatec trade fair in Cologne in 1988) impressed with its characteristic freeform surface.

In 1995 VS developed this object-related table further into a comprehensive office-furniture system. The structural separation of the actual table top from the base assembly pushed the technical aspects into the background, enabling the tables to show off their two-dimensional effect. In 2001 (after being chosen by four different teams of architects) all the administrative workstations of the German Bundestag in the Jakob-Kaiser and Paul-Löbe buildings were furnished with tables from this system. The Series 901, the completely revised version of the office-furniture system, now takes its place in this success story.

System logic

Different frame variants and base assemblies can be chosen for the Series 901 tables. The side brackets are shaped with either round or square profile sections, while a C-foot, V-foot or disc foot is available as the foot frame. Cube-shaped and upright container cabinets and sideboards, which provide storage space next to the workstation, can be integrated into the configuration as base assemblies.

Furthermore, the Series 901 offers a whole range of different table-top shapes. Thus, as well as the classic rectangular tops, there are also, for example, wedge tops or sinusoidal tops available. Further shape variations are curved, semicircular and freeform tops as well as 45° and 90° angle tables.

Here, the different table-top shapes open up different combinations of base assemblies – in each case for the left and right sides of the table. A basis of ten table-top shapes provides for an extensive typology.

The ergonomically exemplary system

In all configurations of the Series 901, the primary emphasis is on realising the maximum ergonomic comfort.

Frames and base assemblies are optionally height-adjustable. The Series 901 has two variants for this purpose. All the frame elements can be height-adjusted in the grid and the base assemblies infinitely height-adjusted, depending on the frame type, in the sitting area from 68 cm to 80 cm. Sitting/standing workstations are available with C-shape and four-legged frames – with infinite electric comfort height adjustment. This ranges, depending on the type of frame and function, from 68 cm to 120 cm (including a convenient memory function) and thus fully covers both sitting and standing areas.

In other words: sit-down tables are transformed as required into stand-up tables – at the touch of a button. In this way, Series 901 effectively supports the ergonomically important regular change of posture between sitting and standing. Even a desksharing concept is made significantly easier by individual height adjustment (including memory function).

Series 901 tables offer different add-on possibilities for a flexible and fully organisable third level. Series 2000 screens and adaptable screens can be used. The screen elements are attached to the table or linked so as to be self-supporting. They permit comprehensive office organisation and also offer the possibility of inserting acoustic panels and thereby meet different requirements through a single structural solution. There are further variants in the form of the add-on systems AddPlus, a function rail with insertable screens and fully organisable expansion elements, and AddBasic, an easy to organise screen panel which stretches over the entire width of the table.
