The VS Planning Compass for Schools

New educational concepts require learning environments that go beyond the traditional classroom. At the same time, planning teams are faced with the challenge of renovating, expanding or rebuilding school buildings – often with the question of which room functions and rooms are actually needed.

The VS Planning Compass for Schools helps to maintain an overview. It structures the diversity of school spaces according to three basic room functions – based on what learners and teachers need:

Traditional learning space: Traditional static classroom for input and guided learning in groups, with frontal and cooperative work phases, classically equipped with table/chair combinations and presentation technology.
Flexible learning space: Multifunctional space with variable furniture and zoning, enabling quick changes between different learning and social forms and supporting individual learning processes.
Differentiation: Specialised area for individualised learning in small groups or individual work, enabling targeted support, parallel learning opportunities at different levels and self-directed work.
Learning office: Structured workspace for independent, self-organised learning according to individual task plans. The teacher accompanies the learning processes as a coach.
Marketplace: Open, diversely designed learning and communication zone that promotes informal learning, spontaneous encounters, presentations and project-related work in a stimulating atmosphere.
Specialist room: Specially equipped classroom for subject-specific, practical and experimental learning processes (e.g. natural sciences, art, crafts, music, makerspace).
Library: Quiet knowledge and research room with media collection, reading areas and workstations for concentrated individual and group work, as well as for promoting reading and information literacy.

Canteen: Central meeting and social space that provides catering during the school day and, beyond mealtimes, is increasingly used as a multifunctional learning and living area.
Cafeteria: Informal lounge-style area for breaks, conversations and relaxed get-togethers in a casual atmosphere.
Assembly hall: Multifunctional meeting room for the school community, events, performances, celebrations and gatherings, which creates identity and publicity and can provide space for movemen
Corridor: Access zone with a high quality of stay, equipped, for example, with fire-safe seating, presentation areas and informal learning areas that go beyond the mere function of providing access.
Recreation: Protected retreat for relaxation and recreation, with a cosy atmosphere, calm design and opportunities to switch off.
Supervision: Pedagogically designed space for homework and all-day supervision, extracurricular activities, free play and guided leisure activities.

Management: Work and meeting room for the school management team for management, leadership tasks, confidential discussions and strategic planning with a representative function.
Team area: Collaborative work and recreation room for multi-professional teams – for lesson/activity preparation, exchange, teamwork and as a social anchor point in everyday school life.
Technology & Support: Functional area for technical infrastructure, administration, device management and technical support.
Secretariat: Central contact, information and organisational point for the school for administrative tasks, reception, communication and administrative processes.
Counselling: Protected discussion room for confidential one-on-one conversations, educational counselling, learning development discussions and socio-educational support in a discreet atmosphere.
